Musée du Louvre

Musée du Louvre, Paris (France): World’s Largest Museums

The Musée du Louvre , Official name “Grand Louvre “, the Louvre Museum or simply the Louvre is one of the world’s largest museums. It is located in Paris, France. The most popular art museum in the world and a historic monument.  A central landmark of Paris, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement .  Nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 19th century are exhibited over an area of 60,600 square meters.

The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre) which began as a fortress built in the late 12th century under Philip II. Leftover part of the fortress is still visible. In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leaving the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection, including, from 1692, a collection of antique sculpture.  In 1692, the building was in use by the Academie des Inscriptions. At the time of the French subversion, the National Assembly assign responsibility that the Louvre should be used as a museum, to display the nation’s masterpieces.

The museum begins on 10 August 1793 with an demonstration of 537 paintings, the majority of the works being royal and commandeers church property. Because of structural issues with the building, the museum was blocked in 1796 until 1801. The accumulation was further raised during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, and at the time of Second French Empire the museum achieves 20,000 pieces.

The Musée du Louvre consist of more than 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art in eight curatorial departments with more than 652,000 sq. ft. dedicated to the permanent collection. The Louvre exhibits sculptures, objects d’art, paintings, drawings, and archaeological finds. Musée du Louvre is the world’s most visited museum, averaging 15,000 visitors per day, 65 percent of whom are tourists In popular. Culture, the Louvre was a point of interest in the book The Da Vinci Code and the 2006 film based on the book. The museum earned $2.5 million by allowing filming in its galleries. Entry for the museum for full day access to the Louvre , except for temporary exhibitions in the Hall Napoleon is 10 Euro.

Sarcophagus, sphinx and other vestiges of ancient civilisations rub shoulders with universally known works of art, such as the Mona Lisa, The Victory of Samothrace or Venus de Milo...However, even though the permanent collection engulfs the art of ancient civilisations, up through the first half of the 19th-century, the Louvre has also chosen to celebrate contemporary creation.

In the heart of the former home of the King's of France, stands the famous glass pyramids of Pei (extremely controversial in 1988). A few feet away, the artist Anselm Kiefer is installed in the northern staircase of la Cour carrée, for contemporary art also has a place inside the museum. A full program of temporary exhibitions, film projections and concerts makes the Louvre a fascinating place to be.
Thus, the Louvre is « a secular institution resolutely focused on the future ».
